2-28 Day 54 At sea

Today I felt like I was in school again – lots of classes.  First bridge, then a cooking class (hands-on) with George Geary, then my creative writing class, and ended with my book club.  Whew!  Tough day at sea!!!  Doug took it easy most of the day since he is starting to feel puny and getting a bad cough like I had.

We made four recipes today:  for an appetizer, Cajun tequila spiced scallops; a cream of caramelized mushroom soup; a Waldorf salad; and blue cheese stuffed pork chops.  For a pastry chef, I’m surprised we didn’t make a dessert!!!  The best thing was the mushroom soup – so rich and creamy and flavorful.  I learned it’s important to really cook the mushrooms down (no liquid), keep scraping the bottom of the pan, use a variety of mushrooms, and add sour cream at the end.  I’ll make this when I get home!

Enjoying the new book about India – a mystery.  The best part, so far, is just learning more about India in it!

Tonight was formal night.  And the theme was pirate night.

Our wait staff:  the only pirates we’re going to see on this cruise, I’m afraid!  I want some action at sea!

Doug was not feeling well at all, so he skipped dinner in the dining room.  I went and enjoyed pirate surf and turf with bananas foster for dessert.  Our waiters are so great – they sent some back for Doug with a nice card they made.

[An Aside:]

Here is a comment that stunned me today as I was leaving book club.  A couple were already dressed for formal night and were standing by a bar as we were all leaving our group.  Someone commented about how nice they looked (we were all still in our day time clothes), etc.  The woman answered – and she wasn’t joking - “well, we are waiting for our private party to begin for all of us with lots of money.”  I guess it takes all kinds!
