3-14 Day 68 Busy day at sea

It seems the first sea day after ports is always full and busy – with more choices and decisions to be made about what to do  – and this was no exception.

I was up early and walked before the day really started so I made sure I got that in.  Doug is always good about walking daily – usually at night – and I haven’t been as good.  Before my 10 a.m. bridge class, I scoped out the Indian market they brought on board ship.  It was mainly little junk with some clothing.

At 11 a.m. Doug went to hear the exploration series speaker, Aileen Bridgewater, while I went to a cooking demo.  I would have gone to hear the speaker, but our new chef was making great Indian dishes.

Doug said the speaker was excellent, and I had to make the time to hear her on the TV channel that broadcasts the speakers.  She was a storyteller and held the audience with her stories.  She hosted a Hong Kong English daily radio talk-show for 14 years and interviewed all kinds of famous people. She shared those stories and interviews, and by doing so, described the different areas of India we didn’t see (and now want to come back to see because of her stories.)

I went to the cooking demo with chef Paulette Mitchell who, in contrast to George Geary (our last guest chef), cooks healthy and light meals.  Another plus to her cooking is that she tries to demonstrate recipes that can be done in about 15 minutes!  Her menu today was all Indian.  Not only did we get the card recipes, she also told us all about spices and herbs and where to buy them.  She made coconut milk curried chicken (which we sampled), vegetables in cumin-scented coconut sauce, and basmati rice with saffron (she used the real saffron threads.)

Doug and I had lunch together and then started catching up on Blog entries.  We lost 30 minutes as we set our clocks forward this afternoon.

4 p.m. was another conflict as Book Club started again and I wanted to see the ship’s movie (so I could see the live entertainment after dinner.)  Since I’ve read the book selection (Snowflower and the Secret Fan), I went to see the movie Old Dogs.  It was fun and light.

We had dinner with Marvin and Sandy (a couple we’ve met and enjoy) at their table – just down from our original table.  We enjoyed “travel talk” and all the related stories that were shared.

The night’s entertainment was wonderful.  It was Opera Interludes (which is a group) who sang a variety of operas.  There were four singers – sometimes sang together, but many solos.  It was awesome – and a great end to a fun day.
